This afternoon, as we came back home, we saw a group of big black ants gathered on the sidewalk in front of our house. They live there peacefully, but we had never seen so many of them together and they looked a bit menacing.

This evening, as I was in the kitchen after dinner, I noticed something strange about the cupboard. I went closer, then closer and I saw a tiny brown ant, about 1mm long. Another. Another. A long line of ants going up and down the cupboard. Then Luca used a torch to try to understand where they were going. We keep all open items in plastic containers, well closed, so we were not so much concerned about ants going in our food, but it sort of spoiled our Saturday night. We saw that there were some very small crumbs on the cookies shelf and all ants were going there. We followed them backwards, till the external wall. Tomorrow we will have fun closing holes…. We emptied the cupboard and cleaned it. No harm done, but it’s never nice to have such unexpected guests.

Then we went upstairs for our skype call with my parents. As we were talking, I saw something moving on the mouse cord. Something big. Another ant, about 1 cm long. Hmmmm….what’s going on here? I don’t want to see these explorers in my house.

After the ant alarm ceased, Luca went downstairs. After a few minutes, I heard him call: “Can you come down?”. I answered “Big or small animal?” – “BIG”. So I hurried down prepared to find a huge cockroach or something like that. When I arrived, he said “Big but cute”. There was a kitten in front of the door, calling and trying to come in the house. Our neighbors’ cat had kittens and they spend much time in our garden. So we made a bowl of milk out of a tetrapak and went out. I started to understand the power of pet therapy. Luca played with the kitten, the mother tasted the milk and went under the car to observe, just to be sure she could trust us. I was hypnotized by that little cute thing, learning to attack a straw and the water pipe. We went inside happy….and with several mosquito bites.

  1. So how long do you think it’ll be before the cute little kitten has moved into a new home (don’t ask me where I think it’ll have moved…)

      • Of course the bedroom is where it feels most at home, so I don’t think it will be too long before it has has chosen a dining room in your house, too, and not just a bedroom!
